Update #36 – SINGAPORE

Jan. 18/13 –  Singapore is a very beautiful and clean city.  There are only 2 seasons here: hot and hotter.  January is already considered the cool month but the temperature was still 30 to 32 degrees and it’s quite humid here.  When I was last here, in 2007, I felt that the cost of living was 10-20% less than that in Vancouver but now, 5 years later, I feel it is 10-20% more.  Population in Singapore is 5.3 million while the whole of BC has only 4.2 million people.

We were in Singapore for 3 days total.   We spent the first day in the city where the infinity swimming pool is and the next 2 days in Sentosa Island which is a popular island resort in this country, visited by some 5 million tourists a year.  There are golf courses, beaches, theme parks, casinos, rides and shows, and more.  And oh, they have Universal Studios here as well.  It’s an amazing destination resort for families or couples.   The whole resort is so clean that we felt that we could eat off the floor.  The service is awesome.  But the price for everything is very high – from food to drinks to rides and excursions.

The original reason we chose to do a stopover in Singapore was for the “world’s highest infinity pool” on 57th floor in the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.  We were impressed with the pool and glad we came but no way can I justify paying $500 per night for the room and $45 per person for the breakfast buffet again.

We moved to Sentosa Island Resorts the next day.  We booked in a “mystery” 5 star hotel for $205 but which meant we wouldn’t know the name of the hotel until we had paid in full and whatever we had paid would not be refunded.   We ended up getting one of the hotels within the Resorts World hotel chain valued at $600. But after we got there, they offered us a free upgrade to the Equarius Hotel, one of their other 6 hotels, which actually costs $800 a night.  Deon was sure happy to enjoy his hot bath while watching TV in this room.  The last time he got to do this was over a year ago in Macau.  What a steal!  I will for sure continue to find “mystery” deals in the future if hotels remain my choice of accommodation.

The highlight for me was the show we watched called Incanto.  It is the best magic show I have ever seen.  For Deon, the highlight was going on the Luge ride.

We are off to Malaysia now….
