Boarding school

April 1/14  – De only has up until this Friday to decide whether to accept the offer he got from a boarding school.  We had talked about this lengthily, including how much he would contribute because he chose to be in the private school rather than be in the public school system which is free.  He has finally made up his mind.  He is going to one of the top rated boarding schools this September and, as his offer, he will be contributing $30 a month towards his 50K/year tuition.  Obviously, what he is going to contribute is nothing compared with the total amount I have to pay for  a year.  But what I want to gain is that my children don’t take things for granted.  He has to shoulder some responsibilities for the choice he made in going to an expensive boarding school.  I have always been very mindful that my kids don’t feel entitled.

I am confident that this arrangement will bring the value I am paying for: a better future for him, the network that he can establish while being there and the maturity and the sense of responsibility he will gain from the experience of being away from the family.

De actually got accepted back to his old school, WPGA, but he’s on the wait list only which means they can not confirm a spot for him till someone gives up their spot.  So I gave De the option of going to apply to the local public school while waiting for a spot to become available with WPGA but he didn’t want that option.

We are both happy that another BIG decision was made today.  I honestly feel it’s a good choice for him especially after I talked to his older brother, his tutors and Neil who was in boarding school from grade 6 to grade 12. I think the experience he will gain will be quite amazing.
