Dec. 13/12 –  Lake Titicaca is known as the world’s highest navigable lake in the world.  Situated at a very high altitude, at 3821 meters (12,536 feet) above sea level, the lake is divided between Peru and Bolivia,  46% on Bolivia side and 54% on Peru side.  Covering some 8,300 square kilometers, Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America, not counting Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela which is connected to the sea by a strait.

Lake Titicaca is a sacred place for the Inca civilization,  As the Incan mythology says, the first Inca king, Manco Capac, was born here.  And that this is the place where the world was created from, when the god Viracocha came out of the lake and created the sun, the stars and the first people.

We took a 4-hour bus ride from La Paz to get to a town called Copacabana.  Then from there, we took a 2- hour boat ride to get to the Sun Island on Lake Titicaca.  I am very impressed with how crystal clear the water on this lake is.  We walked along the very fine sand beach then ate the famous trout for lunch on the island before coming back to Copacabana for dinner.
