Nov. 19/07 – This is a real story I heard in EQ class tonight:
A couple decides to divorce after 20 yrs of marriage due to personality differences. They are going to sign the divorce documents at lawyer’s office tomorrow and so decided to have a nice “last” dinner together. During dinner, the wife gave the husband a “drumstick.” The husband smiles and says, “Yeah divorce is the right choice. After 20 yrs of marriage, my wife still doesn’t know I hate “dark” meat.”
The wife smiles and says, “Yeah divorce is indeed the right choice. After 20 yrs, he still doesn’t know “drumstick” is my favorite part of the chicken but I give up eating it so I can serve it to him instead!”
What’s the moral of this story to me? One – that what’s best for you may not be the best for someone else, even if that someone else is your partner or has been your partner for 20 years. Two – that communication is important. If everyone values communication, then he or she will not have this same experience twenty years down the line.
