De being protective of his friends – Jan 14/09 = 5

So the dilemma today is:

Kel lent De his laptop before X’mas.  But then, when it was returned to him, Kel saw that the “i” key had broken loose.  De denied that it was he who had broken it.  When Kel demanded about wanting to know who did it, De said, “I don’t want to say.”  Wanting to find out who broke the laptop, we mentioned every name we could think of, hoping that De would finally reveal who it was, he would have a justification for absolving the person.  Not being able to think of no one anymore, Kel then concluded it was really he.  This time, De cried and insisted that he wasn’t him.

I gave Deon two choices:  either he would tell Kel who broke the laptop or give him money to buy a new one.  Deon said that he’d rather look for the missing key among the mess of his toys.

When he couldn’t find it, I finally talked him into telling me the truth. It turned out that one of those kids who went to Hai Nam Island with us had broken it.  It is because the reality is that the key was already half loose at the time he got it from Kel. De felt that it was an accident and didn’t want to get those kids in trouble since those are his friends.  The reason that he didn’t want to give out their names is that they might not be welcomed back here again!!

Kel and I were both laughing secretly about it! Deon then apologized to Kel and asked Kel to give him a week to find that missing key.

Guess both my boys have my genes, eh?

I shared this with Butler who said that he knew De was an honorable young man. He said that he found it hard to believe that that at such a young age, Deon already knew that it is not good to betray his friends more especially with the options I had given  him. That’s definitely a great quality.

I was surprised that Deon only chose option C when I only gave him option A and B!!

My reaction to his choice?  Had I not taken any ESP then I would not have seen there are different angles to every situation so I decided to give this 7 year old kid credit for being so creative in finding a solution.
