Jan. 10/14 – Today, I saw a young boy delivering some flyers. This reminded me of my first paying job – delivering newspaper. I was 10 years old then and I did it for two years. I remember I made $5/week from this job. I worked 5 days a week after school, rain or shine. Vancouver’s weather is often rainy therefore it’s not uncommon for someone to come home soaking wet. At times, I got sick but I would still deliver the papers. Thanks to my parents for instilling a sense of responsibility in me ever since I was 5 years old.
From this job, I learned how to find addresses. And my awesome sense of direction probably originated from here. I also learned what it’s like to earn money and have the money to spend on things I liked such as candies or chocolates, or buying fruits to share with everyone in the family. I remember that even at this age, I already felt really proud to be spending money I earned on my own. Well, my family was too poor at that time for me to even think of asking my parents for any spending money. I guess my love for money and the ability to earn money on my own started at this early age.
