June 6/08 – Kel got the MOP (Most Outstanding Player)

I am at the athlete year-end dinner now.  I received an email saying that athletes are required to come and that parents are encouraged to come as well.  And so I did, since I watch every game anyway and despite the fact that Kel discouraged me.  Twice he told me, “Mom, did you know that you don’t have to go?” At first, I wondered why even though I had told him that I wanted to go.

Now, I know why.  I discovered that he is the emcee of the event.  Is he shy?  Is he embarrassed?

Shame on me!  On top of not knowing what his role would be in tonight’s event, I didn’t know that he was also so good at track and field that he got the Most Outstanding Player Award.  And I had thought that he was good at only basketball and soccer.  Now, I learned that he even set a record for the school in long jump.

Really shame on me!  No wonder I don’t click with them.  I don’t even know much about them!! Proud of Kel but ashamed of myself. I wish time can go back then I would probably re-do a few things….. :((

I shared this with Tom and he was surprised that I didn’t know. He said that that was the only reason Kel went through it even with the pain. He really wanted it badly.  Tom then advised Kel that since he had won the award last year already, he need not push it this time because he didn’t want him to risk anymore injuries.  Tom said that both of them were confident he was going to get it.

I told Tom that I, too, am proud of Kel but it also made me aware how little I knew about my son and it gave me answers as to why we don’t click the way I wish to now…. :(( wish I can bring back TIME

Tom is right when he said that too late is never too late. There is always time. I can only hope so.  He reassured me that he knew us both well to be able to say this.  Comforting.

Jun 13/08 – Kel got the “male athlete of the year award” again

Today, Kel proudly showed me the trophy for “Grade 11 Male Athlete of the Year Award.”  Again, he did it.  I recall how much I offended him last year when I offered him 500 bucks if he got that award and 3K if he got into the honour roll. The offer was to go towards the “car fund.”  But, indeed, it was an insult since there was and there is only 1 Athlete of the Year Award but many more for the Honour Roll.  Sure, I don’t want to make the same mistake, so this time, I kept mouth shut and thought of a way to show him how proud I was of him.

So I decided to give him a WISH coupon instead.  Kel actually wants me to list out the restrictions since I wrote “subject to approval” on the WISH coupon and “expiry is lifetime.” I refused to give him the list then he said, “How about a house” when he gets married. I told him not to push it because he needed min of 10 coupons for that. Hahaha

I thank you Barry for giving me this wish coupon idea. Kel seems to love it!!! He came down with a big smile and tried to test my boundaries and restrictions. Haha
