June 28/08 – De into “brand name”
I was at Oakridge with De today for ice cream. I bought a pair of shoes then De asked if I could buy him a pair, too. Then I said, “Sure.” We got into Panda. I asked him which ones he wanted. Right away he pointed to these black runners (so obvious that he knows he wants that). They fit well. The sales person said that the shoes had great ventilation. I agreed before I realized it cost 90 bucks. By then, it was too late to wait for him to pick something else. Meaning, yeah, I bought it.
As soon as Jo saw them when we got home, she said, “Oh, Geox, eh?” Then I asked Jo if it was a brand name. Jo says yes, big time. Apparently, the last time they went to the mall, De already requested for it because his classmate Garrett wore them. Joyce said NO because it was too expensive so she didn’t buy. So being with mommy today, and without telling me why he particularly wanted these, he succeeded in his plan!!!
He looked so embarrassed when Jo told me about it. He was denying it and was almost in tears. Haha. I had a little talk with him already. Now, he has put them in a pile upstairs along with the rest of the items that he was going bring to Melbourne with him next week.
Now comes bedtime stories. We were doing dictionary reading. We got through the word “wandering” so my example was “We were wandering around the mall today and De got a pair of what’s that name, De?” Then for the first time, with a shy-like face, De answered in these exact words “Let’s not talk about it. Let’s just say I got a new pair of shoes“. OMG!! I wish I had a camera to record that exact expression and those exact words of his!! Hahaha. He was so adorable!
It seems like every extra day I spend with De, I will learn more about him… I am be able to find some joy through him. I just wish I could have afforded to have spent the same kind of time back then with Kel and Jo but financial situation did not allow it since I was still in the process of struggling for money to meet our basic needs. :(( But now that those rainy days are over, I will really treasure the moments I get to spend with De before he becomes a teenager and don’t want to be with me anymore (like Kel and Jo these days)…..
June 29/08 – De bought us lunch
Jo asked me to join her for sun-tanning in the yard so I did. We asked De if he dared go to Dominion pizza by himself to buy us pizza while we sun-tanning. He agreed. I asked him to grab my wallet but then he said, “It’s OK. I have money and I will buy.” So he went and grab his waist bag that weighs like 3 lbs of pennies, nickels and max dime only (I gave him last time I cleared my piggy cause it’s too small denomination for me to keep). So off he went but I was worried that he may not have enough money so I said to just buy us garlic bread only.
15 mins later, I got kinda worry so I walked to the pizza store to look for him. I was glad that he was still there. The clerk told me how amazed he was of how quick and accurate De counted his $4.19 before he handed the money over.
Well, his coin waist bag was still pretty full so he offered to buy us pizza too. There he went counting another $7.34 for the pizza. When he was done, he insisted on carrying both the pizza and the bread as we walked back home. Then he divided it up and served it to Kel, Jo and me, saying that it’s his treat.
Then, he said, “Mom, do you think I have enough here left to buy god-mom movie tonight too?” When I said that I think he had enough, he offered that he would pay for it. Hahhaa
I guess “uncheapness” does run in all my kids blood cause I remember Jo and Kel used to do the same!! :))
